And here’s another blockquote, this time with a second blockquote inside. Use this to quote a quote, or even quote yourself, if you will:

Trying out a link within a blockquote here. Not many, if any, themes will have a special styling for such a link though. It’s good enough if it works.

This is the blockquote within a blockquote. It should stand out and not look like yet another blockquote after the one before.

This is the end of the main blockquote which contains that other blockquote from above.

Blockquotes are not hard to style but they can break in IE6 if there’s a background or a border around the blockquote and the theme author didn’t look close enough.

Here’s a sample post with 5 comments and 4 trackbacks, showcasing the styling of the comments area. Do the comments have alternating styling, are author / blog owner comments highlighted? Is the comments form styled, are “allowed tags” displayed? Are the trackbacks styled differently, highlighted or toned down? Does the theme have native gravatar support (without the need for a gravatar plugin)?

The comments area is often a weak point especially in mediocre themes. Not a big deal for sites that barely have comments or don’t allow them anyway, but important for “bloggy” blogs with decent comment activity.

Let’s see if and how headings and other text formattings are styled in the posts of this theme. This is usefull for longer posts where you might want to use subheadings for various parts of your text. Note: You shouldn’t use
<h1>
tags within posts as those should be reserved for the blog title, post titles etc. and thus they aren’t showcased here as they would mess up most themes when used within posts. The h2 heading might have no top margin in this theme. You should leave h2’s to the post titles anyway but if you want to use them within posts, change the style.css accordingly.

Heading h2

Text again

Heading h3

Even more text

Heading h4

Now on to code, pre and address formatting:

Code, for snippets of code:

<?php echo "Hello World!"; ?>

Pre: To display text exactly as it is typed, with spaces included.

Some pre text and now 5 spaces and 3 spaces .

Finally, an address formatting:

Mrs. Jane Doe
123 Second Street
Smallville TX 12345-6789
USA

To use these formattings in your theme, switch to “HTML” (in WP 2.3 and older: “Code“) mode in your Wordpress editor, and surround the to-be-formatted text snippets with
<h2> ... </h2>
(or h3, h4, h5, h6),
<code> ... </code>
,
<pre> ... </pre>
or
<address> ... </address>
.

Let’s see how lists are styled and formatted in this theme. Here’s an unordered list first. A Wordpress theme should:

work in IE6, too

not have a very, very small font, or dark font on a dark background

not use deprecated Wordpress code, so there’s a chance it’ll still work in the next WP version

not use encrypted code, because you never know whether it is malicious or not

One

The ordered lists are less commonly used, so if they don’t look good in this theme but you DO like the theme you could use the theme anyway and simply avoid ordered lists. Or, get another Wordpress Theme.

This post was (or: should be) split into 3 parts / pages - something you might consider doing with very, very long posts. This is just a sample here, so we aren’t making the post THAT long. NOTE: Not all wordpress themes are prepared to deal with this less commonly used Wordpress feature. If this theme does not split the post into three parts as it’s supposed to do, but you like the theme and want to use Pagination, too, you can fix the theme yourself by doing this:

In single.php, add this line

<?php wp_link_pages(); ?>

after the line that begins with

<?php the_content ...

and do the same in page.php, if you want to have the pagination in “Pages”, too. You can also fine tune the Wordpress pagination. To actually use pagination in your posts or pages, insert

<!-–nextpage-–>

… whereever you want the post or page to be split into parts. Make sure to insert that tag into the text while being in “HTML” (in WP 2.3.x and older: “Code“) mode in the Wordpress editor. If you’re on the main page of this blog, click through to the single post to see (or not see) the links to the parts 1, 2, 3 of this post at the bottom of each post part. The pagination should start right after this.

Smilies aren’t used very often in blog posts as far as I can see but in case you DO want to use them (regularely or often) it’s important to see whether they are styled appropriately. Smilies should have a smaller margin than regular images or they won’t integrate very well into the text flow due to their small size. If you see huge spaces around the smilies in this text, then chances are that there isn’t a specific css class for smilies and consequently they get the huge margin settings of regular images because smilies are images too after all.

If smilies look strange in this theme but you like the theme and DO want to use smilies, you can fix the smiley style by adding the following to the bottom of the file
style.css
in your theme folder:

img.wp-smiley {
float: none ; /* don’t float smilies */
border: none; /* no borders */

margin: 0 3px; /* 0 top/bottom, 3px left/right
salt to taste */
}

There are themes that will automatically cut off posts on the homepage and show only an excerpt there. But most themes will display 10 full posts on the homepage. Even with these themes you can still decide to show only a post excerpt on a case by case basis, with the help of the “more” tag. Simply click on the “Insert More Tag” button in the Wordpress editor to set a “cut-off” point anywhere in your post. And this is how that “cut-off” point looks and reads in the theme that you currently test drive. The “more” tag comes now:

Your post proceeds here. Your blog readers will see this (second) part of your post once they’ve clicked through to the post. The “More” tag might read “Read More” or “Continue reading” in this theme. You can customize the “Read More” tag if you don’t like its content.
